![]() ![]() It’s that human touch that makes this series stand out, and it should be upgraded to an ongoing yesterday. There was also a great segment involving the current principal of Jefferson’s school, his personal life, and his role in being a hero to the two young boys who were unwittingly involved in the carnage of the alien weapon. From his first date with his future wife to him finally becoming acknowledged as the force for good he is. However, my favorite segments in this issue were the ones that had nothing to do with Tobias Whale, and simply showed Black Lightning coming closer to becoming the mature local hero that we know he turns into. This final issue makes great use of Lightning’s shapeshifter friend Usagi and has some clever twists in the final act. It’s rare to see a hero long-game like this unless they’re Batman, so it’s great to see Black Lightning use all the resources at his disposal and foil Whale’s plan while Whale thinks he has the upper hand. However, Black Lightning is also smarter than your average hero, and while Whale unloads on him, he’s been planning his own comeback. Isabella is working in a distinctly political and realistic framework here, and its clear Whale has thought about all the ways these guns could be exploited beyond simply causing carnage. Whale can’t help but brag about his master plan – to ship out alien guns to the whole country and reap the consequences of the ensuing chaos. As the issue opens, Black Lightning has been captured by Tobias Whale, and the ruthless ganglord proceeds to give him a brutal beating. Ray: Tony Isabella returning to his groundbreaking creation just as Black Lightning gets his biggest spotlight on the small screen was one of the most unexpected and welcome surprises of 2017, and Black Lightning: Cold, Dead Hands #6 sticks the landing as the miniseries comes to a satisfying close. We'll still have to wait to find out more about the on-screen incarnation of the crime boss and how it will diverge from comic book canon, but for now, this is the perfect choice for Black Lightning and the CW's latest DC offering.Tobias Whale versus Black Lightning. This also points toward a grittier and darker tone for the series, which is an interesting move for the network, given that their lightest series, The Flash, is the most popular DC offering at the moment.įinally, Tobias's inclusion fits in perfectly with how close the show seems to be keeping to the source material, which is a big plus for comic fans. Tobias Whale, on the other hand, is purely human and driven only by his own desire for power, with no semi-mystical training or drug-induced powers to help him out. While Arrow has had a few human villains (as well as magically powered ones), even characters like Malcolm Merlyn have been trained by the League of Assassins and led by the quasi-immortal Ra's Al Ghul. Tobias Whale as a villain choice also continues to separate Black Lightning from the rest of the CW's superhero shows. So far, this seems like it will mirror the story arc of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) in Daredevil, where a somewhat two-dimensional comic villain was made more sympathetic and human throughout the series. This confirms that there is going to be a lot more backstory for Tobias in the series, and that he is going to be more complicated than just an evil crime boss in the background. His hatred for himself and for others comes from a real place, so we want to know why he’s like that." Because we’re not having him sort of twist his mustache. ![]() ![]() I think one of the most interesting characters right now from a storytelling standpoint is Tobias. We really want to explore the characters, even the villains. There’s certainly not going to be a villain of the week. ![]() I don’t know if there’s going to be a fight every week. In Black Lightning, not a lot is known about how Tobias Whale will be portrayed, although Akil did reveal that his character and backstory are going to be explored in the series. ![]()
